Introduction

The school adopts a whole-school approach to foster a reading culture among pupils at different key stages. Adequate reading skills are demonstrated to develop pupils’ lifelong learning capacity. Through the library lessons, the school provides a platform for students to exchange ideas on reading, and to engage pupils in different activities beyond the classroom.

Objectives

To nurture a love and habit of reading among pupils.
To improve reading proficiency of pupils.
To promote effective and independent use of the library resources.
To develop pupils’ information literacy knowledge and skills; and cultivate pupils’ lifelong reading and learning habit in the digital era.

Nurturing pupils' reading habits

Through integrated and interdisciplinary reading activities, our pupils are encouraged to further develop their reading habits, acquiring information literacy skills and becoming a lifelong self-directed learner.

Book Sharing

Students are invited to share their favourite books with schoolmates. Our school invited Story Education Centre to have storytelling and reading workshops to students and parents in March 2024. Books sharing promote English reading and literacy at school.

Morning Reading

Morning reading is held every Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. Music will be played during the morning reading time to create a relaxing reading environment.

Parent-child Reading Workshop

Parents were taught to develop their story telling skills by learning more about voice projection and the use of body language.

Book Fair

The Book Exhibition held twice a year in the school hall. Publishers were invited to set up booths to sell stationary or books in discounted prices.

Tell a tale Children's Story Telling Competition 2023-2024

The competition is organized by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and Teacup Productions. It aims to cultivate primary school students’ interest in learning Chinese (including Putonghua) and English languages, and enhance their confidence and skills in reading, comprehension and oratory.

Throughout the competition, students gained opportunities to hone their language skills, demonstrate their language proficiency and strengthen their public-speaking and storytelling confidence.

Reading Beyond Classroom

In order to develop pupils’ enthusiasm for reading, activities beyond the classroom are arranged throughout the school year.

Reading Mums

We invited interested parents to form the “Reading Mum” group, hoping to foster a love for reading among our students. They visited the school library three times per week to read stories to P.1 pupils and play engaging games with them.

Meeting with Author

Ms Daisy Geddes came to our school to share her book with students. She is the author of the story book “Bravery Grows”, which tells the story of a child struggling with anxiety. Ms Daisy taught the students effective ways to overcome anxiety and regain confidence. Students were also very interested in her life of being an author and her source of inspiration when writing.
